Narcissists wear masks to fool us into believing that they are something other than what they really are. When a narcissist makes a mistake and a mask falls suddenly the victim will see a part of this person that they have never seen before.
Masks generally show us that they are a good person, a church going person, a boy scout leader or a military vet. They use these as a cover to lie and trick the victim. when the mask falls we often excuse this behavior from a narcissist as a moment or a mood and we never suspect that the narcissist just showed their real self. That is when the mask falls.
This is a little scary with me in different masks but I think it really helps understand and it is meant to be funny while not really being funny because this is how they are.
