Hi there this is Tracy when you know what child is going to have to coexist with a narcissistic parent long term

0:00:09.400,0:00:14.340
It’s important to help them develop a strong sense of self

0:00:15.370,0:00:17.370
so that they can

0:00:17.619,0:00:20.459
Stand up for themselves when it’s needed

0:00:21.100,0:00:25.709
Today we’re gonna. Talk about co-parenting with a narcissist, and I’m gonna read an article

0:00:27.279,0:00:34.468
From The Huffington Post and I think that you’re going to enjoy it, but people in my support groups or

0:00:36.070,0:00:43.139
People that I coach I often hear the same exact fear the thinker that I had

0:00:46.210,0:00:50.039
It’s it’s hard to advice my children to my ex

0:00:50.829,0:00:54.929
Because I know how abusive they were to me. How do I?

0:00:55.510,0:01:00.270
Like get through that it hurts and you’re scared for your children

0:01:01.960,0:01:04.140
And then how do you talk about?

0:01:05.379,0:01:10.499
their narcissistic parent to them when they come to you so

0:01:11.140,0:01:16.890
When they come back sometimes they’re confused and sometimes they’re real silent about it

0:01:17.080,0:01:23.669
But how do you talk to them about it when they are concerned because we’re not supposed to take sides. We’re not supposed to

0:01:24.580,0:01:29.669
Talk bad about the other one narcissist. Don’t necessarily honor that rule

0:01:30.310,0:01:37.799
and a lot of us know that your exes talk crap about you and basically poison or

0:01:38.619,0:01:45.569
Child alien parental alienation is when the mother is trying to get the kids away from the father or vice versa

0:01:47.259,0:01:54.959
So we’re all really scared for our children, and I know I hear this one a lot because we all talk about when a

0:01:55.840,0:02:03.119
narcissist how a Narses has got to be a narcissist right that’s just like question marlowe three and

0:02:04.180,0:02:10.979
a lot of the answers have to do with childhood trauma it has to do with if their parents were cray-cray and

0:02:11.320,0:02:17.010
Narcissists then they built that around themselves for protection so that they would

0:02:18.370,0:02:22.019
Be able to withstand the abuse that they were getting so

0:02:23.770,0:02:26.699
How do we not worry about my children going off with this maniac

0:02:27.310,0:02:33.839
Like shouldn’t the judges the laws the police students somebody be there to protect my children and what do I do?

0:02:34.750,0:02:38.970
How do I handle this this article was written by Bonnie?

0:02:40.000,0:02:42.119
Cohen for the

0:02:42.940,0:02:46.770
Huffington Post and she gave me permission to read it to you

0:02:46.810,0:02:54.540
and I read it to my meetup group last week and with a 50/50 split of children of narcissistic parents and

0:02:55.330,0:03:03.059
people divorcing or co-parenting with it a narcissist everyone got something out of this article, so I’m gonna share it with you now a

0:03:06.700,0:03:12.030
Child’s heart and mind can struggle when faced with confusing behaviors of a narcissistic parent

0:03:12.850,0:03:15.989
kids naturally want to trust and feel safe with their parents

0:03:16.540,0:03:20.579
But this can become tough when they begin to realize that the parent may be

0:03:21.850,0:03:25.950
chronically dishonoured or self-centered or when the parent

0:03:26.500,0:03:29.940
displays other narcissistic behaviors such as gas lighting

0:03:30.760,0:03:35.159
projection or creating alternative versions of reality

0:03:37.209,0:03:39.329
People who displayed narcissistic traits

0:03:41.050,0:03:45.510
Aren’t often capable of the kind of selfless love that parenting requires

0:03:46.450,0:03:51.419
They may truly feel that they love their children to mend asleep, but egoless

0:03:52.150,0:03:55.020
Unconditional love is not something they know how to do

0:03:56.170,0:03:58.170
consistently provide

0:03:58.630,0:04:06.389
To them a child is a mirror a validation of the good in them they can’t necessarily see the child as a separate being

0:04:06.910,0:04:10.200
Worthy of love and acceptance just for existing

0:04:12.520,0:04:17.399
Children of these kind of parents learn to feel that their parents love has to be earned

0:04:17.919,0:04:24.478
Or if they do or say anything in opposition to that parent that they may be silenced

0:04:25.090,0:04:27.090
rejected or made to feel

0:04:27.460,0:04:29.410
unacceptable

0:04:29.410,0:04:32.010
And they learn to walk on eggshells

0:04:35.320,0:04:41.459
If not taught the importance of trusting themselves and valuing their own feelings and opinions

0:04:42.190,0:04:45.269
These children can become anxious and afraid

0:04:46.840,0:04:54.780
Molding into what they feel their parents wants them to be in order to receive love and acceptance or to avoid anger

0:04:56.080,0:04:58.139
They may eventually struggle to establish

0:04:58.780,0:05:01.769
Boundaries in their adult life you know

0:05:02.949,0:05:04.949
Here are a few things children

0:05:05.910,0:05:12.269
There are a few things children of parents with narcissistic tendencies can benefit from learning early on

0:05:13.120,0:05:19.110
Number one you are your own person you do not have to think look feel

0:05:19.390,0:05:22.949
Behave speak or believe the same as anyone else

0:05:23.890,0:05:27.839
You are entitled to be separate and a valued entity

0:05:29.110,0:05:31.110
number two

0:05:32.140,0:05:34.140
You are allowed to speak your mind

0:05:34.570,0:05:41.010
You must not be afraid of angering someone if you disagree with them their anger is not your responsibility

0:05:43.510,0:05:45.510
Number three

0:05:45.670,0:05:49.409
You’re accepted and loved exactly how you are

0:05:50.170,0:05:54.719
You do not have to earn love by being what anyone else wants you to be you

0:05:55.240,0:05:58.799
Do not need to put on a show to receive love

0:06:00.760,0:06:02.760
Number four

0:06:02.890,0:06:05.489
Everyone loves differently some people love

0:06:05.980,0:06:12.749
unconditionally and some people don’t you can’t make someone love you in a way that they don’t know how and

0:06:13.450,0:06:15.629
This is never a reflection on you

0:06:17.830,0:06:21.989
Number five your words matter your thoughts matter

0:06:23.020,0:06:27.209
You just have as much right to be here and heard as anyone else

0:06:29.140,0:06:34.379
Number six you are trusted and will always be heard and believed

0:06:36.640,0:06:41.009
Number seven you will always know in your heart, what is true?

0:06:42.430,0:06:47.340
Trust your sense of right and wrong, and if you get confused talk it out

0:06:49.630,0:06:51.630
Number eight

0:06:52.120,0:06:55.950
Love is what people do not what they say

0:06:57.580,0:06:59.169
Number nine

0:06:59.169,0:07:02.759
People demonstrate that they care about you in their own way

0:07:03.040,0:07:08.549
It may sometimes feel different from what you have learned to perceive as love, and that’s okay

0:07:11.910,0:07:18.799
You were always good enough you were always wanted, and you weren’t always accepted that’s number 10

0:07:19.890,0:07:26.029
These points can be broken down and taught in various age-appropriate ways if a child has a sense

0:07:26.310,0:07:31.820
That something is off for the parents. They can simply be taught the basic principles about love

0:07:32.430,0:07:34.140
respect and

0:07:34.140,0:07:36.140
boundaries

0:07:36.150,0:07:40.820
They don’t need to learn what narcissistic behavior is

0:07:41.910,0:07:44.989
Or that their parent may be demonstrating it

0:07:45.690,0:07:49.309
Their parent may not be brought into this lesson at all

0:07:50.250,0:07:55.369
The child only needs to learn the value of their independence their separateness

0:07:56.160,0:07:59.660
their right to be and to speak and to think

0:08:00.540,0:08:08.089
They need to learn the value of honesty, and the importance of allowing not allowing anyone to twist their reality

0:08:08.940,0:08:14.089
They can be taught to check with trusted adults when they feel confused about the world

0:08:16.110,0:08:20.510
When you know a child’s going to have to coexist with a narcissistic parent long term

0:08:20.640,0:08:27.679
it’s important to help them develop a strong sense of self so that they can stand up for themselves when needed and

0:08:28.560,0:08:34.429
not allow the parent to make them feel that they are simply an extension or showpiece a

0:08:36.000,0:08:41.719
Few lessons early on can provide a child with the strengths and skills that they need to

0:08:42.000,0:08:47.479
Prevent themselves from becoming a source of narcissistic feed isn’t that what we wanted here

0:08:48.180,0:08:52.849
when fortified with self-worth and boundary setting skills a

0:08:53.310,0:08:58.609
Child has a far better chance of coming out of a narcissistic family with strong

0:08:58.950,0:09:03.530
confidence and a healthy ability to recognize integrity and

0:09:04.290,0:09:06.290
unconditional love I

0:09:08.010,0:09:14.900
Hope that this story helped you I know that it helped me and it has helped many people since I have read it to them

0:09:14.900,0:09:16.530
as well

0:09:16.530,0:09:22.429

0:09:37.560,0:09:39.560
Unless we get the help that we need

0:09:40.620,0:09:43.099
