Finding the ‘WHY’ behind your Triggers

FINDING ‘THE WHY’ OF YOUR EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS

Every time you are triggered, the emotion you felt from an unhealed trauma is revealed, both positive and negative. A memory, people, places, sounds, smells, or even a calendar date can trigger an emotional response which then causes you to relive the feelings from that past event. Understanding the ‘why’ helps bring the unknown to the surface and ease the fears associated with it.

Do you find that your body reacts a certain way when you receive treatment that you are uncomfortable with?

Do you feel specific sensations throughout your body and you don’t know why?

Do you find that you get physically ill when you encounter particular individuals or actions?

If you answered yes to any of these, it is likely that you are experiencing triggers from past events. A body holds memories, just like muscles, and its method of protection is to provide physical awareness – it is our job to recognize and address the emotion accordingly.

What can you learn?

  • emotions - learn how to recognize and react accordingly
  • 'the why' behind the trigger - if you can recognize feeling a certain way, you can learn how to categorize it into what you were really feeling. This understanding can help you put the triggering emotion behind you.
  • examples of the behavior and 'the why' - allowing yourself to express your truth about why you react the way you do to particular situations can propel you past them in future occurrences. There is no shame in admitting how you feel to yourself.
  • practice makes perfect - generate the thoughts necessary to acknowledge your feelings, accept them, and move on.
